DNA - THE GENETIC MATERIAL
Timeline → DNA as Genetic Material...
- Frederick Griffith (1928) → Studied (Streptococcus pneumonia) and discovered the "transforming principle".
- Avery, MacLeod and McCarty (1944) → Realised Griffiths observation could be used as part of an experimental strategy to biochemically identify the genetic material. So they confirmed that DNA was the substance being "transformed".
- Hershey and Chase (1952) → Proved DNA (not protein) was the genetic material, by using radioactive sulphur and phosphorus to trace fates of protein and DNA of T2 phage that infected bacterial cells.
Scientists involved in discovering DNA Bases, Structure and Replication...
- Erwin Chargaff (1905-2002) → Suggested that DNA was made up of equal quantities of purines and pyrimidines.
- Watson and Crick (1953) → Double helix model of DNA (along with Rosalind Franklin)
- Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) → X-ray diffraction studies - discovered helical structure of DNA
- Meselson & Stahl (1958) → Correct mechanisms of DNA replication proposed and proved by them.
